Meeting Marilyn Manson

I once "met" Marilyn Manson back in 2009 through a meet and greet organised by HMV. Manson was promoting 'The High End of Low' and I must have spent all of 10 seconds actually interacting with him. Still it was a surreal experience.

I don't know that guy in the shell suit. He was there with a lady in a wheel chair who was his friend, relative or handler, I was never really sure. Anyway they asked if I'd take photos for them so I obliged and did a terrible job. Thankfully Manson randomly grabbed the camera & started snapping, so there is at least an interesting story behind them.

Destiny

Destiny is very flawed video game, but I would be lying if I haven't had a lot of fun with it.

Xcode 7 Beta 3

8GB! The current version of Xcode sits at just over 5GB. I wonder whats different. Perhaps Interface Builder is finally retina?

How Apple Makes the Watch

Fascinating post by Greg Koenig.

In the above shot, blanks are placed in an immersion ultrasonic tester. What Apple is looking for is the presence of voids or density variances within the structure of the blank that, under stress, could lead to part failure or surface defects as material is removed in further machining processes. This level of inspection is, to put it mildly, fastidious beyond where most other companies would go (save Rolex). Immersion ultrasonic inspection is typically reserved for highly stressed medical implants and rotating components inside of aircraft engines; not only does this step take time, it also is typically performed by custom built machines of tremendous expense.

In school I always thought of tech lessons as a good time, but ultimately something to coast through. Really wish that I had paid more attention. Being a software developer is great, but sometimes I pine for a craft that brings something into the physical world.

The Apple Watch for me

For a while now I've known that if Apple were to enter an entirely new product category I would buy it. I was too young & poor to be a part of the new iPhone/iPad zeitgeists. However I also realise the huge improvements that come from 2nd gen products. The original iPad was only supported up to iOS5, while the iPad 2 technically still lives on as the iPad mini. Because of that I'm going to be keeping the Apple watch as cheap as I can, with the 42mm Apple Watch sport. To be honest I think it looks the nicest anyway.
